He has videos ranging from all different skill levels and he spends the time to explain how and why he does things so that you're not just replicating a script but understanding how to apply techniques for your own problems. As for a book, I would recommend AAD.   I'm a beginner and I want to learn more about programming with these programs. The learning material from rhino is too expensive for me.
